Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ran on a Democratic Socialist platform for New York’s 14thCongressional district. With her controversial agenda, she was able to beat Joseph Crowley during the 2018 New York primaries. She went on to win the district in the general election against Anthony Pappas. Despite her victory, she is not an ideal leader for the Bronx.

A brief overview of the Bronx

Her agenda filled with hate and greed does not take into consideration the struggles that Bronxites go through on a daily basis:

  • Crime in the Bronx, murder, has risen 92% during the summer of 2018
  • More than half of Bronx neighborhoods are living poverty
  • The Bronx has been deemed the least healthy borough and the one with the worst quality of life in the state
  • While rent decreased in all other boroughs of New York City, Bronx rent “skyrocketed”
  • More than 11.4% of high school students drop out and there is a record number of homeless students in the Bronx

The Bronx is facing these issues under a Democratic government. It is important to mention that under the current Medicaid and Medicare systems, Bronxites and small medical practices are not receiving enough resources to improve health in the borough.

Ocasio-Cortez believes that more government will solve these issues and there is a shocking fact that she has yet to realize, these issues are caused by big government. Due to high property taxes, landlords are forced to increase rent making it harder for renters in the Bronx to pay their rent. The state has taken away power from local school districts which have led to students and teachers not having the necessary resources for quality education.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez failed to touch upon these issues during her campaign.

“Just pay for it”

Despite having a Bachelor’s in economics, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez seems to not have paid enough attention during her college courses. On the Daily Show with Trevor Noah, she stated that “200 million Americans make less than $20,000 a year, that’s more than 40% of this country.” According to the World Bank and the United States Census Bureau, there are 325.7 million people living in the United States. For that number to be true, the American population has to be at 500 million or more. According to the Social Security Administration, 34.9% of wage earners made less than $20,000 a year, a number that has gone down from 36% since the beginning of Trump’s presidency. It is also important to mention that, 27.3 million Americans work part-time, some students between the ages of 16-24 work part-time and seasonal workers that work during the holiday season. Therefore, she is misleading voters and viewers with her made up “facts.”

In an interview with Jorge Ramos she was asked about Medicare for All, she responded “People often say, like, how are you gonna pay for it and I find the question so puzzling because, how do you pay for something that’s more affordable? You just pay for it!” Even though she has a bachelor’s in economics, Ocasio-Cortez believes that money grows on trees and it can be picked whenever it is convenient for her. For the daily worker, single-payer healthcare will increase their tax rate will increase by 2.2 percent.

In New York State, people will see a 12.2% payroll tax and a 12.4% non-payroll tax. Small businesses in the Bronx, with 50 employees or less, will have to pay $1200-$1800 more per employee which will force them to close their doors or move out of the state.

Conclusion

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is not an ideal representative for the Bronx. She has fooled the 14thCongressional District however, young Bronx Republicans will stand up to her agenda filled with hate and greed. She does not care about the Bronx, she only cares about fulfilling the selfish Democratic agenda in D.C. If she really cared for the ordinary Bronxite, she would at least take the time to educate herself on the issues that Bronxites face because of the Democratic rule over New York State.
