Op-Ed: Parenting In Troubling Times

One of the biggest challenges we are facing in today’s postmodern world can be seen with raising our children amid those in a decaying world culture. Parents more than ever are faced with difficult decisions in light of the troubling times all around us. It is our daily decisions that will influence and instruct our children. A good parent should sow good seeds into their relationships with their children and teach them how to plant those seeds in others, despite their environment. Our culture can influence greatly influence the upbringing our children. Whether, it is a television program, movie or the video games we allow them to watch; undoubtedly, they will be impacted by the positive or negative influences that surround them.

The current wave of crime and gun violence can usually be traced to a negative and unhealthy lifestyle derived from the roots of an unhealthy environment. Guns do not pull their own triggers; it is criminals and the mental ill that are creating violence in our schools. This makes our daily activities a safety issues even within our own colleges and schools. According to data from the US Naval Postgraduate School, there were 94 school gun violence incidents this year a record high since 1970, which is as far back as the data goes, and 59 percent higher than the previous record of 59 in 2006. Estimated for 2017, the number of civilian-owned firearms in the US was 120.5 guns per 100 residents, meaning there were more firearms than people. Although we hold and support our second amendment rights it is important to work towards common sense gun reform laws. Laws that would provide background checks and keep firearms from the hands of those with mental incapacities.

As parents, we should be aware of what our children will be exposed to and be responsible and accountable to what is going on in their surroundings that can influence them. Leaving children unattended and open to view anything they wish will reap an array of negatives in their souls regardless of their stage of development. Entrust and keep a close relationship with God and you will have the most important tool needed, the power of God’s teaching and faith will never fail! As it is said in the book of wisdom – Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” We never know what the future may bring, but we can be sure that we know who holds our future.
