Nevada Governor Blocks Malaria Medication from Being Used to Treat Covid-19
Nevada’s Governor, Steve Sisolak (D), has issued an executive order preventing Hospitals in Nevada from using Malaria medication to treat patients infected with the Covid-19 virus.
Governor Sisolak (D) said, ” There is no consensus among experts or Nevada doctors that the drugs can treat people with COVID-19. ” The Center for Disease Control approved both hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine as therapeutic options for the treatment of COVID-19. Both of these drugs in the past had great success in treating patients with other types of Coronaviruses. In particular, they have been successful in treating Sars-Cov and Sars-Cov2.
According to the CDC, a study showed that hydroxychloroquine alone and in combination with azithromycin reduced detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in upper respiratory tract specimens compared with a non-randomized control group.” Recent trials in China have shown that chloroquine has a curative effect on Covid-19. Patients that were treated with Chloroquine have exhibited a faster drop in fever, an improvement in Lung CT images, and shorter recovery time.
Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine effectiveness in treating the COVID-19 is still under investigation. All of the initial studies have shown that the drugs have promise in treating the COVID-19 virus. As of right now, there is not a cure as President Trump himself said that Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine should be taken carefully. These are extremely strong medications and should not be taken lightly. According to a report on the Tucker Carlson Tonight, a Man in Azoriona died after self-medicating with Chloroquine that he had at home that he was using for his fish.
Governor Sisolak(D) reaction to events like this is to ban the use of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine until there is more proof of its effectiveness. This is the wrong message to send and the wrong lesson to take away from recent events. The individual in Azoriona died not because the drug is ineffective but because he was self-medicating. Self-medicating with non-prescribed drugs that are as strong as hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine is dangerous. Like any other drug, it needs to be used only in consultation with a health professional. Do not start panicking and self-medicating with these drugs they could kill you.
Despite the recent misfortunate of individuals like this man, hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine are among the best chances of treating COVID-19. Right now, medical professionals need to be able to figure out what the best dosage or combination of drugs can treat COVID-19. Governor Sisolak(D) has tied the hands of health professionals in Nevada, and they are now unable to use the drugs that have been proven to work in treating other strains of the Coronavirus.
