Conservatives value personal agency as the right for every person to be true to their beliefs and accountable for their actions. The keystone to conservatism is the belief that people should be held accountable for their actions. It is the core reason we support platforms that prioritize strengthening the family unit, value hard work, and promote self-reliance.

Being held accountable is the key ingredient to building a strong character because accountability fosters responsibility and accomplishment, which we need for positive self-esteem. When individuals forfeit accountability for their actions they also forfeit their accomplishment. This leads to low self-esteem, weak character, and a weak nation.

Government dependence drains work ethic and does not motivate people to grow. Politicians bribe individuals with promises of free health care, college, rent, but conservatives understand these bribes are never truly free. Individuals gain these ” free” bribes at the cost of their independence, quality of life, and sense of security.

As conservatives, we value the family as the central unit of society that powers our communities. When the family unit is strong then the community is strong. The traditional family unit of having a mother and father raise children in the home is the most successful system for rearing citizens in the world.

The Brookings Institute reports that “today, more than 40% of American children, including more than 70% of black children and 50% of Hispanic children, are born outside marriage. This unprecedented rate of non-marital births, combined with the nation’s high divorce rate, means that around half of children will spend part of their childhood in a single-parent family.

According to Census data, children from single-parent households are five times more likely than children from married-couple families to live in poverty.  Poverty is associated with a wide range of negative outcomes in children, including school dropout and out-of-wedlock births.” (Brookings)

While critics mislabel conservatives as cruel corporatists who care more about money than people, that is simply not true. Conservatives care about people so much that we focus on data-driven, proven steps for success to empower women and men from all backgrounds.

It is the conservatives that will build America’s future. Rather than rely on government solutions, conservatives value self-reliance and consequently develop strong families with a strong work ethic that are better equipped to serve their community.
