Today, President Trump revealed his comprehensive immigration plan to fix our broken immigration system which the Republican National Hispanic Assembly fully endorses. President Trump said this, “Our plan achieves two critical goals: First, it stops illegal immigration and fully secures the border and, second, it establishes a new legal immigration system that protects American wages, promotes American values, and attracts the best and brightest from all around the world.” President Trump’s comprehensive immigration plan can be broken down into Border Security, Merit-Based Reform, Closing Immigration, and Closing Immigration Loop-Holes. This plan is going to fundamentally change the way our immigration system functions and makes it fair for all individuals involved.

Border Security

At the cornerstone of President Trump’s immigration plan is national security through full-border security. Approximately one million aliens will arrive on our Southern border this year alone and over a hundred-thousand aliens each of the past two months. President Trump’s plan will create a self-sustaining border security plan.

According to White House officials, it will ensure that 100% of all people and goods at ports of entry will be inspected, stop drugs, contraband, counterfeit goods, and facilitate faster trade. In addition, it will secure our Southern Border by adding to the 400-plus miles of border wall underway in strategic locations. The proposal will also enable public donations for the wall, fully empower immigration officials to protect the American communities by strengthening their ability to remove criminal aliens and alien gang members.

Closing Loop-Holes, Asylum Seekers and Unaccompanied Minors

President Trump’s plan will also close legal loops in order to put an end to chain migration and expedite the review process for immigrants that are seeking asylum. It will change the law to stop child trafficking and rapidly reunite unaccompanied children with their families back home. In order to achieve this goal, President Trump will implement structural changes to immigration agencies to improve coordination and enforcement to combat the longstanding problems in our immigration system. In addition, President Trump’s plan will ensure that all employees are authorized to work in the United States of America.

Prioritizing Merit Over Chance

President Trump’s plan will replace our current system of chain migration and visa lottery with a merit-based system. Currently, around 70% of immigrants who come to the United States are admitted based on family relationships or through the visa lottery. The current immigration system hurts vulnerable Americans by perpetuating a system, which undercuts wages and drains our social safety net programs. The President’s proposal creates the “Build America Visa,” which will select immigrants based on a point system, which features three high-skill categories: extraordinary talent, professional and specialized vocations, exceptional academic track records.

Currently, only 12 % of all visa applications are based on employment and skill. Compare that to Canada, which has 63% visa applications based on employment and skill. President Trump’s immigration plan ensures that the best and brightest individuals are brought to the United States of America. America is losing the global competition for talent, and President Trump’s proposal will ensure that we are competitive again.

The President’s proposal prioritizes the immediate family, ensuring that parents and children will be at the front of the line to obtain a green card.  If Congress adopts the President’s Proposal, it will create prosperity and higher wages for all Americans, a fair and transparent immigration system that levels the playing field for potential immigrants and create greater diversity. President Trump’s proposal will revive our immigration and put an end to the border crisis.
